Otsikko: Premodern Euro Champs 2026 Gdansk -rapsa
Kirjoitti: Vilhis - 14.09.26 - klo 12:58

Olen pelannut formaatissa lähinnä The Rockia.

En pidä perinteisiä The Rockin listoja kovinkaan hyvinä. Olin pelannut Call of the Herdiä paria kappaletta aiemmin jossain listassa, ja muistin sen olleen ihan hyvä. Theorycraftasin pakan ja muistaakseni lista jäi tismalleen samanlaiseksi kaikkien testien jälkeenkin. Modossa liigat menevät 4-1, 5-0, 3-2 ja 4-1. Lisäksi paperilla parit pelit menevät 3-1 ja 4-1. Luotan pakkaa ja odotuksia pärjäämiselle alkaa kertymään. Call of the Herd on nutsit.

Listan linkki (https://mtgdecks.net/Premodern/golgari-decklist-by-ville-nevalainen-3078228)

Pakan korteista moni lienee aika selkeiltä valinnoilta.

Molempien pelaaminen splittinä on taas vähän nonbo.

Ja sitten itse turnaukseen:

R1: Enchantress 1-2

Modossa voitinkin saman matsin viimeksi 2-1.

R2: Junk Nic Fit Rectoreilla 2-0

Vihu on oikein leppoisan oloinen ja kotoisin Tanskasta. Jossain vaiheessa vihu pelaa muutamia Pattern Rectorista tuttuja kortteja ja hiki nousee niskaan. Match-uppia on lähes mahdotonta voittaa. Näen vihulta myös outoja one-off enchamentteja, joita on vaikea kuvitella combommassa pakassa pelattavan.

G2 vihun pakka tuntuu lähinnä Junk Midrangelta. Jollain vuorolla vihu pelaa Veteran Explorerin ja siinä vaiheessa tietenkin tajuan pakan olevan Nic Fit. Grindaan vihua paremmin ja voitan matsin 2-0.

R3: Naya Terrageddon 1-1

G3 vihulla on lähes koko ajan pieni etulyöntiasema. Lisävuorot loppuvat tilanteessa, jossa vihu voittaisi seuraavalla vuorolla.

Helppo 2-0.

Tämä on  The Rockin yksi parhaista match-upeista. Noughtiplääni on hauras ja sidetys pahentaa tilannetta entisestään. Vihu ei ilmeisesti kuitenkaan tuonut Brain Freezejä sisään, mikä voisi olla hänen kannaltaan parempi plääni voittoon.

R7: Stasis 1-1

Kun vihu pelaa t1 island go, olen iloinen. Olisipa vastassa Nought.

R8: Stasis 2-1

Vihu aloittaa t1 island go. Sama juttu siis kuin viime kierroksella, mutta tuplatasurin bracketissa en usko vihuni olevan Noughtilla. Arvaan oikein.

Ensi vuonna uusiksi?

Report in English:

Premodern European Champs Report

When tickets for the Premodern European Champs went on sale, I decided it might be fun to try playing the format outside Finland for a change. Gdańsk also seemed like a great destination, and I had never been there before.

I've mostly played The Rock in Premodern. I've also tested a few matches with Machine Head, Jund Wurm, and 4C Nic Fit. I own the cards for at least Moneyball Black and Sligh as well, but I never got around to sleeving them up.

Over the years I've played many different versions of The Rock: traditional builds with Wall of Roots, Blastoderm, Recurring Nightmare, and Deranged Hermit, as well as Lanny Rock with Phyrexian Rager, Genesis Rock, and various hybrids of these archetypes.

I don't consider the traditional Rock lists particularly strong. Before the tournament, I spent a lot of time brewing and testing different versions, both in paper and on MTGO. Genesis Rock was especially appealing because I liked, and still like, its approach to the archetype. The deck is essentially a kind of Haunting Echoes Control deck with a huge amount of value generated through three Dust Bowls and engines such as Genesis + Krosan Tusker + Nantuko Vigilante loops. The downside in a long tournament, however, is that the deck is rather slow.

I then started wondering if I could push The Rock more toward the Moneyball style while also streamlining it. That's when Muse Rock caught my attention. I'd played a couple of Call of the Herds in previous lists and remembered the card being very good. I theorycrafted the deck, and if I remember correctly, the list remained exactly the same throughout testing.

The MTGO league results were 4-1, 5-0, 3-2, and 4-1. In paper testing I also went 3-1 and 4-1. My confidence in the deck kept growing, and so did my expectations for the tournament.

Call of the Herd is absolutely busted.

Decklist (https://mtgdecks.net/Premodern/golgari-decklist-by-ville-nevalainen-3078228)

Many of the cards are fairly self-explanatory choices. Eight discard spells, with Call of the Herd, Ravenous Baloth, Deranged Hermit (Muse), and Treetop Village serving as win conditions. Four Pernicious Deeds and four dedicated removal spells (Smother and Diabolic Edict).

Krosan Tusker is more of a value card and may look a bit strange in the list at first glance. In practice, though, it's excellent and fully deserves its slot. A three-mana instant-speed, uncounterable Divination is perfectly respectable in this format. And in long games, a seven-mana 6/5 body gets the job done as well. Tusker saved me multiple times from the mana lock created by Rishadan Port, provided I'd first reached three mana.

The sideboard Tempting Wurms have also raised some eyebrows. They are mainly there against Sligh and other aggressive decks. They can also come in during matchups that tend to devolve into topdeck wars. You board out Duress and bring in Wurms instead, for example against a Moneyball-style deck. As long as you don't blindly slam a Wurm on turn two, there's usually very little risk involved. That said, the Sligh matchup is already favorable, so the Wurms may well be a bit of overkill.

One interesting sideboard consideration is graveyard hate. Haunting Echoes is exceptional against Replenish strategies, such as UW Replenish and Enchantress, but significantly weaker against something like Rector compared to Phyrexian Furnace or Tormod's Crypt. Running both as a split creates some nonbos, though.

Tournament Report

Round 1: Enchantress (1-2)

Even though discard spells and Deeds are excellent in this matchup, and the sideboard provides even stronger options like Tranquility and Haunting Echoes, I wasn't exactly thrilled when I saw my opponent was on Enchantress.

I lost game one quite convincingly, as usually happens. In game two I drew plenty of discard and a well-timed Tranquility won the game. In game three I mulliganed to six and kept a hand with Ravenous Rats, two other discard spells, and three lands. The game started well, but then my opponent topdecked gas while I flooded out.

Starting the tournament with a loss is never ideal.

I actually think the matchup is better than it looks at first glance. My opponent agreed after the match. In my most recent MTGO league, I had beaten the deck 2-1.

Round 2: Junk Nic Fit with Rectors (2-0)

My opponent was very friendly and came from Denmark.

At one point he played several cards familiar from Pattern Rector decks, and I immediately started sweating. That matchup is almost impossible to win. Was this really going to be an 0-2 start followed by an early trip to the bar?

Fortunately, I managed to strip his hand with discard and answer his threats, winning game one. I noticed an unusually high number of basics, though, suggesting this wasn't the Rector deck I was used to. I also saw some strange one-of enchantments that seemed out of place in a dedicated combo shell.

In game two the deck felt more like Junk Midrange. When my opponent played Veteran Explorer, I finally realized it was Nic Fit. I out-grinded him and won the match 2-0.

Round 3: Naya Terrageddon (1-1)

Game one was long and grindy. Both of us played multiple Call of the Herds, trading Elephants back and forth. Eventually a Graveborn Muse stuck, and the resulting card advantage carried me to victory.

Game two was also fairly long. At one point I thought the game was safely won and that I was cruising toward a 2-0 match victory, but my opponent peeled better than I did and suddenly I found myself losing.

In game three my opponent maintained a small edge almost the entire time. Extra turns ended with him poised to win on the following turn.

I don't generally like draws, but under the circumstances I accepted this one reasonably happily.

Round 4: UW Control (Non-Landstill) (2-0)

My opponent played their cards, I played mine.

Same story in both games: I completely buried them in card advantage and board presence without much trouble. I don't have many other memories from the match.

The opponent was nice and came from Greece.

Round 5: Junk Oath (2-0)

From my perspective, my opponent barely did anything in either game. They cast some removal, some land destruction, and occasionally tried to stick an Oath of Druids, without success.

2-0. GG.

Another very pleasant opponent, this time from Sweden.

Round 6: Mono-Blue Nought (2-0)

My opponent played well and both games were long. However, I never felt truly threatened at any stage, despite not resolving a creature quickly in either game.

I won both games while holding multiple answers in hand. A comfortable 2-0.

This is one of The Rock's best matchups. The Phyrexian Dreadnought plan is fragile, and post-board things become even worse for them. My opponent apparently didn't bring in Brain Freeze, which might actually have been a stronger route to victory.

Round 7: Stasis (1-1)

When my opponent led with turn-one Island, go, I was happy.

"Please be Nought."

That happiness quickly faded when they played Forsaken City. Stasis. Time for more grinding and very long games.

It's been a while since I'd played against Stasis, so I may have been a bit rusty. I failed to play around Upheaval, and my opponent won game one thanks to it. To make matters worse, I would have won on the following turn, but they finished me off with Fire/Ice. Looking back, I could have been a bit more aggressive at one point, which likely would have secured the win.

Unfortunate.

Game two was also long and featured another Upheaval, but this time I didn't lose to it. After the game, there were only about five minutes left on the clock.

Game three remained unfinished. My opponent mulliganed into a solid hand, but I had lands, discard, and plenty of answers as well. We simply ran out of time.

Round 8: Stasis (2-1)

My opponent once again opened with turn-one Island, go. Just like the previous round. However, in the double-draw bracket, I doubted they were on Nought.

I guessed correctly.

The previous round served as excellent practice, and I played this match much better. We played three long games. I stayed patient, tried to avoid tapping out, and thought carefully through every decision.

2-1.

I don't remember the exact details anymore. In this matchup, much of the game consists of passing turns without action and carefully choosing when to deploy threats.

Final Result

5-1-2, 28th place.

I have to be happy with that result. A Top 30 finish, and the best individual finish for The Rock in a tournament of this size, is definitely something I can be proud of.

MVPs
1. Cabal Therapy

Unsurprisingly, this card is incredibly powerful, especially if you can hit blindly.

Throughout this tournament, I was right with Cabal Therapy almost every time. It played a huge role in many of my wins.

You can read your opponent's expressions, notice "almost-plays" where they nearly tap mana for something, think about which cards they would or wouldn't play, identify likely draws by examining graveyards in long games, and most importantly ask yourself:

What card can beat me? What's the worst thing they could possibly have?

2. Call of the Herd

It's nice to play a version of The Rock that can actually apply pressure quickly.

There are also very few matchups where Call of the Herd isn't excellent.

It was great to see so many Finns at the tournament. One of the best parts of the trip was the company and everything outside the games themselves.

Same time next year? 🍻
